Eligibility & Requirements
Currently, our tool supports individual applicants only. We don’t yet support corporation applicants. You must be requesting certification as a U.S. tax resident and must have filed required U.S. tax returns for the years you’re requesting certification.
You can select from the past 5 years plus the current year. However, you must have filed U.S. tax returns for the years that your certification will be based on. For current year requests, you’ll need to confirm you’ll remain a U.S. tax resident for the entire year.
Yes, you must have filed U.S. tax returns (Form 1040) for the years that your certification will be based on. The IRS generally issues certification only when they can verify you filed returns for the relevant periods.
If you filed jointly, you’ll need to provide information for both yourself and your spouse, including names, taxpayer identification numbers, and signatures. Both spouses’ information must match exactly as it appears on your tax returns.
Payments & Submission
The IRS charges a $85 fee for processing Form 8802. You can pay electronically or by check/money order. If paying electronically, you’ll need the confirmation number from your payment to include on the form.
After downloading your form, you must submit it to the IRS yourself by mail or fax, along with the required fee. We provide submission instructions but do not handle the submission process.
Yes, electronic signatures are acceptable for this IRS form. Our tool allows you to sign electronically using your mouse or touchscreen. However, you should verify current IRS requirements for electronic signatures.
